When Queso Meets Cowboy Boots: A Wild Tale of Collabs

This evening I was doing what any self-respecting Austinite might do on a quiet Sunday: shopping for a new pair of Tecovas. A beloved hometown brand, their boots are stylish, on-trend, and built to last—equal parts fashion statement and functional legacy.

So imagine my surprise when, on their home page, I saw the words:
“Tecovas x Chili’s: Limited Edition Booth Boots.”
First thought: Is this real?
These boots are literally made from Chili’s booth material. You read that right. The faux leather you spilled queso on in 2012 is now an ingredient in premium Texas footwear.
My mind immediately went to the image of Ted Mosby strutting down the street in his infamous red cowboy boots.
If you know the reference, you know: Ted and his boots were the ultimate symbol of misplaced confidence and earnest delusion… and somehow, weirdly, endearing.
Sure, both brands are Texas institutions that I love, and I don’t want it to seem as if I’m speaking ill of either. I’m a proud Austinite, loyal to Tecovas (who makes some of the finest boots in the game), and I have nothing but fond, queso-soaked memories of Chili’s. And come on… who hasn’t, at some point, gotten that earworm of a marketing campaign stuck in their head?
"I want my baby back, baby back…" I get it.

But this got me thinking: Where do these collabs stop?

As someone who’s worked in brand partnerships for years, I love a good mash-up when it’s real. My favorite examples:

Rumpl x Snow Peak USA, Inc.: Fire-resistant camp blankets combining Snow Peak’s Aramid tech with Rumpl’s cult-favorite design. It made sense. It met a need. It made the blankets resistant to sparks and embers.

Arcade Belt Co. x Outdoor Research: OR took Arcade’s iconic stretch webbing from their beloved belts and built it right into OR’s ski bibs—boosting mobility, comfort, and credibility. No gimmicks. Just smart innovation.

Those collabs? Built on shared values, shared consumers, and actual utility.

But this collab?
This one feels like Ted saying, “I can pull these off,” while Marshall and Lily exchange panicked looks.

Here’s the truth: Not every crossover needs to happen. But when they do—they better be legend… wait for it… dary. Legendary.
